Fight, Flight or Freeze –Psychological counselling

Wikipedia definition of Fear is a feeling induced by perceived danger or threat , which causes a change in metabolic and organ functions and ultimately a change in behavior, such as fleeing, hiding, or freezing from perceived traumatic events. Fear in human beings may occur in response to a specific stimulus occurring in the present, or in anticipation or expectation of a future threat perceived as a risk to body or life.

Fear, however is a vital response to physical and emotional danger — if we didn’t feel it, we couldn’t protect ourselves from legitimate threats.

Fear can be learned by experiencing or watching a frightening traumatic accident or a personal experience with someone close maybe family or friend. Children develop fears from parents for example, when parents make statements like “If you don’t behave boogie man will take you”. Or children are frightened  of darkness with statements like “ghost will be there” There are many common phobias like fear of cockroaches, spiders, heights, examinations, failure, dark spaces, public speaking etc with fear of death and future quite in the forefront.
Unrecognized and unaccepted fears, buried deep within the psyche, sabotage children’s creativity, self-esteem and relationships.

Some of the basic childhood fears which get carried into adulthood are:-

  • Fear of rejection and abandonment
    • Fear of being misunderstood
    • Fear of physical/sexual abuse
    • Fear of parental expectations

Parents too pass their fears of survival, not earning enough money, or not being able to support their family to their children. This in turn effects the child’s relationship with money as they grow up.  All these fears give birth to fear of being inadequate, insignificant, unloved, unwanted, disrespected, abused, ridiculed, ignored, or put down.

The insecurity developed from fears create panic and a feeling of victimhood inside children and adults alike.

Cognitive behavioural therapy addresses these issues by citing examples and practical lessons to change the thought process. Face the fear to overcome the fear of fear calls for strength which is possible through counselling sessions and building ones confidence levels.

The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveler, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim,

Because it was grassy and wanted wear;

Though as for that the passing there

Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.

Oh, I kept the first for another day!

Yet knowing how way leads on to way,

I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

ROBERT FROST

Would you like to take the path less travelled  by?

Are you at cross roads ?

Would you like to investigate and explore your hidden talents?

Would you like to know what is your unique skill set prevailing?

Would you like to be fearless ???

One size does not fit all / Life coaching services

There is no one size that fits all.  We all come from different backgrounds and cultures   and find ourselves amongst varied situations and need to mix and match our responses based on the stimulus received.

Life and its flow maybe simple but it does get complicated based on our thinking and at times we even use our thinking process on behalf of others. In a sense we actually get tired by our own thoughts.

It is through the interactions, inter personal relationships, exchange and reciprocity  with our environment and surroundings we form our views, opinions, perceptions, associations, attachments and are thoroughly influenced by them. These maybe proper or improper which is essentially contextual. But if our views opinions do not resonate with the social gathering in general you maybe an exception.  So long as there is no anti-social behavior or radical thinking causing any form of discomfort or disturbance to anyone it may be normal. But if the behavior is otherwise, as in extreme it may need addressing. Radical thinking and behavior without reasoning maybe a result of a disorder.

Attention to individuals for extreme behavior is given by specialists in the field . Through an in-depth study of their behavioral patterns and influencing factors …… Causes are explored and appropriate remedies suggested.

The crux of the matter is sailing through life in a state of peace and happiness without hurting oneself to start with and without hurting, hindering, hampering another’s progress in life.

Connect with our psychologists in Chennai to get tuned in to your frequency to produce waves of synchronicity.

Yoga is a way of Life –Life Coaching

Yoga is a way of life. Yoga is being one with the divine.

Yoga is being promoted and marketed in different names and forms from power, hydro, air, rope, hot, Iyengar , Bikram, Vini, Yin, Kundalini yoga, etc.  Any genre of exercise   is a good way to start till it is formed into a habit and the seeds are sown to make it a controlled behavior. Gradually, subtle shifts in the mind and   increased energy levels, is witnessed besides changes in perspective.   Receptivity is improved considerably and resistance vanishes.

It has become a norm nowadays to enroll in yoga classes which are packaged in different names based on the style, techniques and agility of the teacher. Rolling out the mat for an hour for stretches and breathing exercises may lay the foundation for reaching a state of yoga.  However it needs to become a discipline and way of life to become a yogi.

To realize the divinity within us the practice becomes the modus operandi. There are many saints and sages who have written volumes on yoga however the most commonly known is the yoga sutras of Saint Patanjali.

Yoga, as mentioned, is to become aware or realize that we are not human beings having a spiritual experience, but spiritual beings having a human experience.
Practice makes perfect. A steadfast approach and discipline of practicing the asanas and pranayamas is a way for pratyahara and dharana.  However this is not a linear process but subtly inter twined and inter linked. To be able to withdraw our sense perceptions from the outside world to the inner leads to conservation of energy. A concentrated effort results in sustaining and maintaining our demeanor.

Discipline, dedication, determination, devotion will lead to discernment. Being composed, calm relating with clarity, moderation and the ability to restore balance are the results of continued practice.

Yamas and niyamas are tools that pave the way for grace to flow.  These are ethical guidelines for a moral code of conduct. Effectively a to-do and not- to- do pointers

Our  view,s opinions, negative thinking ,strong belief  patterns ,sense perceptions, walls ,barriers ,fortresses that we build around ourselves slowly crumble and collapse.

What are you suppressing?

Thoughts.. Feelings ….Emotions… Views… Opinions…????

Due to unrelated fears, fears of supremacy, fear of rejection or negative thinking we tend to hold back our thoughts and emotions leading to a lot of frustration and anger.

This can adversely affect the body, as what is on the mind gets related to the body. These can show up as aches, pains, illness and dis-ease. The uneasiness caused by suppressed emotions not only affect our own body’s but largely impact our behavior towards ourselves and others. Neglect, anger, irritation, hate, guilt, regret get pent up.   These have contra indications in our digestive system, increase the risk of dying from heart disease and certain forms of cancer.

Suppressing intense feelings as a strategy for short term reasons definitely result on a long term consequence. Shutting down emotions results in agitation and reflects in our body language and moods too. It hampers communication in a relationship and causes tension. It has been suggested as a remedy to write down our thoughts, use a punching bag or fight with your pillow as a catharsis but these are temporary.

Addressing our fears, accepting our emotions and embracing our feelings is the actual cure. Through psychotherapy and repeated counselling sessions a person can be relieved of emotion suppression, to come out strong and speak up firmly.

UNLEASH YOUR POWER ….. Psychotherapy

Are you or anyone known to you experiencing _

Irrational thoughts?….distorted thinking?…..strong  beliefs?….superstitions?….negative opinions?…..muddy thoughts?

If yes reach us for assistance at TATVAMASI.

Peer influence, social mores, parental supremacy, other environmental factors impact our ways of thinking and behavioral patterns. We form strong belief systems and thought forms that may not resonate or be compatible with the general norms and forms of thinking.

Due to flaws in reasoning, an individual can make a mountain out of a molehill. Exaggeration, blowing things out of proportion and dramatization becomes a way of speech and behavior.

Having abnormal fears, superstitious beliefs, perverted thoughts, warped opinions,  holding strong views ,makes it difficult for an individual to be in social gatherings or in family groups as there is no common ground for any exchange of views ,opinions or a conversation.  This results in the individual feeling isolated.

Following are some examples of such psychological issues –

  • Health Fears –  being a hypochondriac with excessive and undue thoughts about having a serious illness. Amplifying even small injuries and pains.
  • General Worries – of not receiving a phone call or even if a pencil is misplaced resulting in increased anxiety
  • Social Concerns – anxious about attending parties or being in groups due to perceived scrutiny by others causing distress.
  • Incorrect Beliefs – a repetitive behaviours like in obsessive compulsive disorder for washing hands or checking if the door is locked
  • Phobias – irrational fears and aversions can result from a lot of things like insects, animals, places, heights etc
  • Superstitions – Friday the 13th. Associated with paranormal fears

When psychological issues disrupt an individuals ability to function and handle daily chores efficiently, it is important to meet a counsellor  for treatment and remedial measures to regain control over ones life.
